Telecommunications Access Iowa (TAI) provides vouchers to qualified Iowans to get specialized phone equipment, such as amplified phones, captioned phones, and accessories (headsets, flashing ringers, etc.). TAI’s vouchers cover up to and over 95% of the average cost of the equipment, so there is very little to no out-of-pocket cost to you!
TAI also offers iPads with special pre-loaded accessibility apps that are specific to an individual's communications needs. For example, a Deaf recipient would have video-specific apps while recipients with speech difficulty would have speech-specific apps. Vouchers for iPad equipment covers up to 99% of the cost of equipment.
Check out their website to see what options are available and to apply for equipment that best suits your communication needs. For any questions regarding the program, please contact the TAI Program Manager, Dylan Heuer, at [email protected] or (VP) 515-207-0776.

Support for Visual Language
The American Society for Deaf Children has information on its website about the evidence from research that supports using sign language with infants and small children. Using sign language provides early language learning experiences that are critical to future success, it is the earliest possible mode for expressive language, and using sign language poses not risk to other language skills. Read more about the benefits of using sign language with all children on the American Society for Deaf Children's website: http://deafchildren.org/knowledge-center/parents-and-families/early-visual-language/
