Telecommunications Access Iowa (TAI) provides vouchers to qualified Iowans to get specialized phone equipment, such as amplified phones, captioned phones, and accessories (headsets, flashing ringers, etc.). TAI’s vouchers cover up to and over 95% of the average cost of the equipment, so there is very little to no out-of-pocket cost to you!
TAI also offers iPads with special pre-loaded accessibility apps that are specific to an individual's communications needs. For example, a Deaf recipient would have video-specific apps while recipients with speech difficulty would have speech-specific apps. Vouchers for iPad equipment covers up to 99% of the cost of equipment.
Check out their website to see what options are available and to apply for equipment that best suits your communication needs. For any questions regarding the program, please contact the TAI Program Manager, Dylan Heuer, at [email protected] or (VP) 515-207-0776.

Your Child's Right to an Interpreter
Did you know that your Deaf or hard of hearing child has the right to a sign language interpreter for activities outside of their school day? Your child has the right to an interpreter for doctor or dentist appointments as well as many other community activities. The agency or business is responsible for the cost of the interpreter, not you, the parent or guardian. Be sure to request an interpreter for your child when you make an initial contact with the entity. If the entity is resistant to your request you may refer them to the Iowa Office of Deaf Services. They can be reached through the Iowa Department of Human Rights at (515) 242-5655.
The Iowa chapter of RID provides a list of licensed interpreters in order to assist people in finding a sign language interpreter. That information can be found here.
